4 Days in Rome: The Perfect Itinerary for First-Timers

June 29, 2026 · 1 min read

Rome layers three thousand years of history into a walkable center. Four days lets you see the icons and still linger over pasta and people-watching. Here's the route.

Day 1 — Ancient Rome

The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill in the morning (book ahead), then the Capitoline Museums and a sunset over the ruins.

Day 2 — Vatican City

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel early, then St. Peter's Basilica and the climb up the dome. Spend the evening across the river in lively Trastevere.

Day 3 — Baroque Rome

A walking tour of the great piazzas: the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and the Spanish Steps, with gelato stops throughout.

Day 4 — Your Rome

Markets at Campo de' Fiori, the Borghese Gallery (book ahead), or a day trip to Ostia Antica.

Budget note

Mid-range, around €100–160 per person per day. The historic center is best on foot.

Pack for Rome

  • Comfortable walking shoes — Rome's cobblestones are relentless and unforgiving in the wrong shoes
  • An anti-theft crossbody bag — for crowded spots like the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain
  • A reusable water bottle — Rome's public fountains (nasoni) are free, clean, and everywhere
  • A local eSIM — data the moment you land, no hunting for airport wifi
