Ireland Road Trip: 7-Day Itinerary for First-Timers
June 29, 2026 · 3 min read
Ireland is made for a road trip — small enough to circle in a week, with scenery that changes every hour of driving. Seven days is enough to combine Dublin's pubs and history with the dramatic coastline that makes Ireland worth the flight.
Days 1–2 — Dublin
Start in Dublin: Trinity College and the Book of Kells, a walk through Temple Bar (touristy but fun once), and a proper pint of Guinness at the Guinness Storehouse, where the rooftop bar has the best view in the city. On day two, visit Kilmainham Gaol for a sobering, essential piece of Irish history, then spend the evening chasing live traditional music in a Temple Bar pub.
Days 3–4 — The Cliffs of Moher & the Wild Atlantic Way
Pick up your rental car and drive west toward the Cliffs of Moher — 700-foot cliffs dropping straight into the Atlantic, best experienced by walking a stretch of the coastal path beyond the main viewing areas. Base yourself in Doolin or Galway for the night. The next day, drive into Connemara, a wild landscape of bogs, mountains, and stone walls that feels centuries removed from Dublin.
Days 5–6 — Galway to the Ring of Kerry
Spend a morning in Galway itself — colorful shopfronts, buskers, and a lively pub scene — before continuing south. Drive part or all of the Ring of Kerry, a 111-mile loop of coastline, lakes, and mountains that's one of Ireland's most scenic drives. Killarney makes a good overnight base, with Killarney National Park worth a stop if you have the time.
Day 7 — Back to Dublin
Drive back to Dublin, stopping at the Rock of Cashel if your route allows — a dramatic medieval fortress on a hilltop that's easy to combine with the drive east. Spend your last evening back in Dublin for one final pub dinner before flying home.
Best time to visit
May, June, and September offer the best odds of good weather without July/August's peak crowds and prices. Ireland is green because it rains — pack for it any time of year, and don't let a forecast of rain change your plans; it rarely lasts all day.
Where to stay
Dublin for nights 1–2, then a mix of small-town B&Bs along the west coast (Doolin, Galway, Killarney) rather than chain hotels — Irish B&Bs are genuinely part of the experience, with better breakfasts and more local advice than any hotel.
Getting around
You'll want a rental car for this itinerary — public transport can't reach the Cliffs of Moher or Ring of Kerry on a reasonable timeline. Remember Ireland drives on the left; roads outside major towns are narrow, so budget more driving time than Google Maps suggests.
A realistic budget
Plan on €130–190 per person per day including a rental car, B&B stays, and pub meals. Ireland isn't cheap, but pub food is good value — a proper meal with a pint typically runs €20–30.
