How to Plan the Perfect Road Trip

September 14, 2026 · 1 min read

A great road trip is about the stops as much as the destination. Here's how to plan one that's all open road and no wrong turns.

Pick the route, then the pace

Decide your start and end points, then resist the urge to cram. A good rule: no more than 4–5 hours of driving on most days, so you actually have time to enjoy the stops.

Build the trip around the stops

The detours are the point — a quirky roadside town, a national park, a famous diner, a sunset viewpoint. Research stops along the way and space them out so each day has an anchor.

Sort the logistics early

Book key accommodations in advance for popular stretches, plan rough fuel and food stops, and check your car (or rental) before you go.

Leave room to wander

The best road-trip memories are usually unplanned. Keep some days loose enough to chase a "what's down that road?"

A few things that make the drive better

  • A solid phone mount — your itinerary and map are useless if you're holding the phone in your lap
  • A car USB charger with multiple ports — one outlet, several phones, zero fights about whose turn it is
  • A soft cooler — cheaper snacks and drinks beat gas-station prices at every single stop
  • A backseat organizer — keeps snacks, chargers, and trash off the floor for the whole trip
